Lady Godiva by John Collier - 'Lady Godiva' (ca. 1897, Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry, England), by John Collier (1850-1934), a British Pre-Raphaelite painter of historical and mythological themes.
In 'Lady Godiva', John Collier depicts a beautiful woman sitting on a horse and with a downcast eyes, looking towards the earth, rides through the silent and deserted streets of a medieval town, only clothed in her long golden hair, whose lovely tresses encase her body like a veil.
Lady Godiva (Godgifu) was the wife of Leofric, Earl of Mercia, one of the powerful lords who ruled England under the Danish king Canute. According to the legend, Lady Godiva has sympathized the people of Coventry, who were suffering by the oppressive taxation. When she appealed to her husband, to lower the taxes, he answered with playful raillery, that he would do that 'if she would ride naked through the streets of the town'. Lady Godiva took this seriously and the surprised husband had to keep his word and to cancel the onerous taxes. - , Lady, ladies, Godiva, John, Collier, art, arts, 1897, Herbert, Gallery, Museum, Coventry, England, 1850, 1934, British, Pre-Raphaelite, painter, painters, historical, mythological, themes, theme, beautiful, woman, women, horse, horses, eyes, eye, earth, silent, deserted, streets, streeet, medieval, town, towns, golden, hair, lovely, tresses, body, veil, veils, Godgifu, wife, wifes, Leofric, earl, Mercia, powerful, lords, lord, Danish, king, Canute, legend, legends, people, oppressive, taxation, husband, husbands, taxes, playful, raillery, streets, street, seriously, word, words, onerous - 'Lady Godiva' (ca. 1897, Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry, England), by John Collier (1850-1934), a British Pre-Raphaelite painter of historical and mythological themes.
