Descripción A fragment of 'Cockfighting' (1615, oil on panel, Gemaeldegalerie, Berlin), an oil painting by the Flemish painter Frans Snyders (1579–1657, Antwerp). Frans Snyders was famous with paintings of animals, hunting scenes, market scenes and still-lifes.
Snyders was born in Antwerp as the son of Jan Snijders, owner of a wine inn frequented by artists. He was recorded as a student of Pieter Brueghel the Younger in 1593. The skill of Frans Snyders was appraised by Peter Paul Rubens, when in 1613 he has invited him to collaborate to work on images of animals. Snyders was also a regular collaborator with leading Antwerp painters such as Anthony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens.
