Jordan Staircase of the luxurious Winter Palace, St Petersburg, Russia, where the Imperial family have spent winters. The building of the palace was built in 1754-1762 during the reign of Empress Elizabeth. It sprawls over 60,000 square meters, with an extensive yard, 1,500 rooms and 117 staircases.
The principal or Jordan Staircase of the Winter Palace, is so called because on the Feast of the Epiphany the Tsar descended this staircase in state for the ceremony of the 'Blessing of the Waters' of the Neva River, a celebration of Christ's baptism in the Jordan River.
During state receptions and functions, the Jordan Staircase was a focal point for arriving guests.
