The Palekh miniature is a Russian folk handicraft of a miniature painting, which is done with egg tempera paints and often guided with real powdered gold, on varnished articles made of papier-mache. Differing from Fedoskino lacquer boxes, the art of Palekh is typically painted in a more Byzantine style.
Today's artists do paint on the lacquer boxes wonderful icons, Russian troikas, fairy tale and traditional peasant scenes.
