Traditionally the outer layer is a woman, dressed in a sarafan, a long and shapeless traditional Russian peasant jumper dress.
Much of the artistry is in the painting of each doll, which can be very elaborate, following the theme, as fairy tale characters or different world leaders.
Matryoshka dolls may have been inspired by a nesting doll imported from Japan, or the Kokeshi dolls, originating in Northern Honshu, the main island of Japan.
