In folk beliefs, March 1 marks the beginning of spring. On this day, Bulgarians adorn themselves with white and red martenitsa for health and happiness.
Martenitsa is credited with the magical power to ward off 'evils', illnesses and lessons. It is taken down when the first stork or swallow is seen, and hung on a blossom tree.
