According to an ancient tradition in Bulgaria, each year on the 1-st of March in anticipation of the spring are exchanged martenitsas, adornments, made of a white and a red twisted thread. The white colour symbolizes the winter and its purity. The red colour symbolizes the coming spring, new hope and the expectation of the warm weather, and keeps away the evil spirits and the diseases.
