'Sleeping Beauty' (1921, oil on canvas, private collection), by John Collier (1850-1934), a British Pre-Raphaelite painter on historical and mythological themes and portraits of kings, noblemen, actors and socialites personalities. John Collier was a founding member of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters.
This remarkable Pre-Raphaelite picture is an illustration of the famous fairy story of 'Sleeping Beauty' in the European literature, by Charles Perrault in the seventeenth century and later recast by the brothers Grimm in the nineteenth century.
John Collier depicts the scene with the asleep princess inside the palace. Through the leaded windows, studded with stained-glass is seen the overgrown garden in which the prince must fight his way for to break the spell.
