'Touch and Go, To Laugh or No', beautiful painting (1857, oil on canvas, private collection, listed at Bridgeman Art Library), by Sophie Gengembre Anderson (1823-1903), a French-born British artist, landscape painter and illustrator, known with her wonderful lifelike paintings of Victorian children. The boy and girl in this painting were probably the children of Walter and Sophie Anderson, who play nursery game, popular in the 1850s, called 'You must not laugh, you must not cry, till I count to ten'.
