A wonderful sight in close-up of a very colorful and quite stately wild turkey of Merriam’s subspecies (Meleagris gallopavo merriami), widespread in much of the western United States, from Montana to Arizona. A male turkey is large and can weigh nearly 23 pounds. Despite their weight, the wild turkeys unlike the domestic turkeys, can fly up to 55 miles an hour and to run up to 20 miles per hour.
