The opening ceremony kicked off on February 4, 2022.
With its 20.9 million residents, the most populous city, Beijing is the first city to host both the Summer (2008) and Winter Olympics (2022).
The emblem was designed by artist Lin Cunzhen which combines traditional and modern elements of Chinese culture, as well as features embodying the passion and vitality of winter sports. It is inspired by the Chinese character for 'winter', and resembles a skater at the top and a skier at the bottom.
