'The Cellist' ('The Cello Player') is a famous and an extraordinary work by Amedeo Modigliani (1909, oil canvas, Gallery Jan Krugier, Geneva and in private collection since 1985). On the back Modigliani has painted a sketch-portrait of the Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi, who introduced him to the African sculptures and masks. Modigliani has painted many portraits of children as the portrait of 'Alice' (1915, oil on canvas, National Art Gallery of Copenhagen, Denmark), interesting with the contrast and finesse of the painting.
