A fragment of Russian Easter egg with painted icon of 'Mother of God of Kazan' (Our Lady of Kazan or Virgin of Kazan). The Kazan icon played a major historical role in Russia's destiny. The intercession of the Mother of God helps the country to repel the Polish invasion in 1612, the Swedish invasion in 1709, and again when Napoleon invaded Russia in 1812. During the World War II, a copy of the icon of the Virgin of Kazan lead a procession around the besieged Leningrad.
