Kulich is a kind of Easter bread which plays an important role in religious ceremonies in the Orthodox Christian faith, shared by Russian and Ukrainian people.
Kulich is a symbol of atonement on the cross by Jesus Christ.
During Easter, most popular bread is semi-sweet, tall, cylinder-shaped. The top of the bread represents a dome of church with snow on it. Kulich is topped with a glaze of sugar and decorated with flowers, dotted with raisins, nuts and candied citrus rind.
Traditionally, kulich which is blessed by the priest after the Easter service, is eaten before breakfast each day. Any leftover kulich which is not blessed, is eaten for dessert. Kulich is only eaten during the 40 days following Easter until Pentecost.
