Descripción Common Buckeye butterfly (Junonia coenia) in the family Nymphalidae, is widespread in open sunny areas with low vegetation throughout Central America, Mexico and Colombia, Southern Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, and Nova Scottia, coast of California and the Bermuda island. Huge numbers of Buckeye butterflies migrate southward into peninsular Florida, where they overwinter. The adults feed on nectar and take fluids from mud and damp sand.
The amazing bright 'peacock' spots are protective coloration and serve to startle or distract the predators, especially of young birds.
