Purple Emperor (Apatura Iris) is a magnificent and elusive Eurasian butterfly in iridescent purple-blue of the Nymphalidae family, widespread in broadleaved woodlands throughout Central Europe, Southern Britain, temperate parts of Asia, including Central and Western China.
Unlike most butterflies, Purple Emperor spend most of their lives in the dense and mature oak woodlands, feeding on the nectar that secreted by aphids and the oozing from trees. They go down only to lay their eggs and drink from puddles or feed.
