Emperor Moth (Saturnia pavonia) is a large moth in family Saturniidae, widely distributed in most parts of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland, inhabiting woodland ridges, moorland and heathland, bogs and fens, hedgerows, scrubs and sand dunes.
The male has a wingspan of about 60 mm and more intensely brown-white coloring with bright orange on hind-wings, in contrast to the female, which has larger wingspan about 80 mm, but is more paler colored in bluish-grey. Both have wings adorned with huge 'eye-spots', which play a role of camouflage. Males fly fast during the day, and the females fly more sluggishly at night.
