Emerald Swallowtail, Emerald Peacock, Banded Peacock or Green Peacock (Papilio palinurus) is a very beautiful butterfly of the genus Papilio, belonging to Papilionidae family, widespread to Southeast Asia, throughout India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan.
Papilio palinurus has a wingspan about 8–10 cm. Its name comes from the
stunning emerald color that literally sparkles on the wings. The green sheen comes from mixing of the yellow and the blue color of the overlapping flakes on the wings, which refract the light. The broad bright emerald green metallic bands and black patterns on the wings, resemble coloration of the peacock, which distinguish them apart from other species.
The Emerald Swallowtail butterfly is known for its quite fast flight, high up in the forest canopy.
