The Scarlet Peacock or Brown Peacock (Anartia amathea) is a very beautiful butterfly of the family Nymphalidae and a common specie which is found on both sides of the Andes, from Colombia to North Chile. It likes sunny open habitats such as forest clearings, roadside areas, pastures and orchards, riverbanks, fields and glades, at altitudes between 100-800m with of low herbaceous vegetation.
Anartia amathea is a medium-sized butterfly with a wingspan of about 4 cm and wings covered with small flakes that reflect light, observed as dark brown or black coloration. The males have red ornaments, while females are slightly larger and orange.
