'Fighting cocks' is a beautiful painting by Charles Tunnicliffe (1901-1979), an internationally renowned British naturalistic painter of birds and other wildlife in their natural environment. Charles Frederick Tunnicliffe was born in Langley, near Macclesfield, Cheshire and spent his early years on the farm at Sutton, where he was able to observe the birds in nature. In 1916 he began to study at the Macclesfield School of Art and won a scholarship to the Royal College of Art in London. He spent most of his working life on the Isle of Anglesey.
His work was characterized by its precision and accuracy in several techniques, including watercolor painting, etching and aquatint, woodcarving, woodcut and oil painting. He illustrated Henry Williamson, Brooke Bond and several books, including 'Ladybird Books'.
