The best sled dogs are the purebred dog breeds, such as the Siberian Husky, Alaskan Malamute, Chinook and Samoyed.
Dog sledge teams were first used in Antarctica in 1898 by the British Antarctic Expedition. Roald Amundsen used sled dogs to reach the South Pole in 1911.
The sled dogs today are still used by some communities, especially in areas of Alaska and Canada and throughout Greenland. They are used for recreational purposes and racing events, such as the Iditarod Trail and the Yukon Quest.
