The Khalifa International Sadium was first built more than 40 years ago, opened for the 1976 Gulf Cup. It was then extensively refurbished to host the Asian Games in 2006.
It is now once again being remodeled and modernized in order to prepare for the 2022 World Cup with a capacity for 48,000 fans. It has redesigned arches and new canopies to provide shade for spectators. There’s also a cooling system for players and fans. LED lighting illuminates the grass field and digital floodlights allow imaginative color schemes to decorate the arches.
Another interesting thing to know about the stadium is that it has a large platform on the eastern side, which can be used for launching fireworks.
