Peterhof Palace and Grand Cascade St.Petersburg Russia Beschreibung:
View of the majestic Great Palace and the Grand Cascade fountains in Peterhof, St.Petersburg, Russia, a breathtaking UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Peterhof is a small town, built in the 18th century by Peter the Great, on the outskirts of St Petersburg, often referred to as the Russian Versailles.
The elegant building of Great Peterhof Palace with beautiful view to the sea and the enchanting gardens was conceived by Peter the Great as a luxurious summer royal residence to rival the luxury of the French Kings, as personally choses the site where several underground water springs were located.
The unending water supply maintains the 64 fountains of the Great Cascade, whose marble tiers lead down from the Great Palace to the Gulf of Finland.
The most remarkable fountain in the park, with 21 meters water spray, is Samson and the Lion. The fountain's golden masterpiece of sculptural composition 'Samson Rending Open the Jaws of the Lion', symbolizes the tsar's victory over Sweden in the Battle of Poltava in the Great Northern War.
