'No walk today' and 'Guess again' (oil on canvas, private collection), two beautiful paintings by Sophie Gengembre Anderson (1823-1903), a French-born British artist, landscape painter and illustrator, known for her wonderful realistic paintings of Victorian children. 'No walk today', painted presumably in the late 1850-s, depicts the disappointment of a little girl dressed up for a walk which has been cancelled because of rain. The painting is most famous and beloved work of art by Sophie Anderson which presents childhood, one the paintings in the collection of Sir David, purchased only for 14 guineas on an auction in London in 1926 and sold at Sotheby's auction in 2008 for the record ?1,038,050.
