Beautiful drawing of a winter scene with a decorated Christmas tree, lit with candles in the dark and cold night of Christmas Eve.
The symbolic meaning of the Christmas tree originated in pagan culture, where the evergreen fir represents life, rebirth and stamina, needed to survive during the winter months and the coldest days of the year. It was believed that the evil spirits that are more strong during these months, are afraid of the light and because of that, evergreens with candles have been used as symbols for protection from them.
During the nineteenth century, the Christians attach a more bright and cheery symbolism of the Christmas tree, as a symbol of the 'Tree of Life'. The candles on the Christmas trees represent the light of Christ, while the apples symbolize the knowledge.
