This divine beautiful picture of Mother Mary with the Baby Jesus Christ in her lap and the Archangels Michael and Gabriel, depicting the instruments of His Passion, is one of many art reproductions of the icon 'Our Lady of Perpetual Succour'. The original is from the thirteenth century, in Byzantine style, painted on wood, on a golden background. It was brought to Rome towards the end of the fifteenth century by a pious merchant, and for nearly three hundred years it was exposed in a church of San Matteo, Via Merulana, between St. Mary Major and St. John Lateran for public veneration.
