The Arctic fox (Vulpes lagopus), also known as the polar fox, white fox, or snow fox, is a small fox native to the Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere and common throughout the Arctic tundra.
The hunting behavior of the arctic fox is well adapted to its environment. The fox uses its front facing ears to triangulate prey location under the snow. The arctic fox can hear a lemming under 46 to 77 cm of snow and a seal lair beneath 150 cm of snow. Foxes also have a keen sense of smell to track the prey. She can track a polar bear or the smell of a carcass from 10 to 40 km away.
