Raphael Loggias in Hermitage St.Petersburg Description: 
The Raphael Loggias in the Hermitage, St.Petersburg, were
commissioned by Empress Catherine II in the late 1780s, and are the exact copy of the the gallery of the Apostolic Palace in Vatican, painted according to the sketches of Renaissance painter Raphael.
The Loggias vaults are decorated with scenes from biblical stories, copies of ‘Raphael’s Bible. The walls are covered with paintings with ornamentation motifs.
The copies, made in Italy by a group of artists under the supervision of Christopher Unterberger, took their place in the gallery of a separate building erected by Giacomo Quarenghi.
