The watercolor painting of the 'Pavilion Hall The Small Hermitage' (1864) by the Baltic German painter and graphic artist Eduard Hau displays the majestic and richly decorated hall, used for luxurious receptions and imperial balls in mid 19th century.
When lived in Saint Petersburg, he produced numerous interior portraits of rooms in the Winter Palace, the Peterhof Palace and other Royal residences. He was on the membership list at the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1854, and probably remained in Russia until c.1880.
The pavillion is decorated in carved marble, columns and arches and along with the 28 huge crystal chandeliers, mosaics and fountains, it creates an atmosphere of an oriental palace from fairy tales.
