Ceiling Painting in Peterhof Palace St.Petersburg Russia Описание:
Ceiling painting 'The Sacrifice of Iphigenia' (1690) by Augustin Terwesten, located in the Chesmensky Hall of the Grand Peterhof Palace, St.Petersburg, Russia.
Augustin Terwesten Senior (1649–1711) was a Dutch painter, draughtsman, printmaker and art educator. He was known in his time for his decorative paintings in luxurious residences many of which have since disappeared. In 1678, he set up a workshop in the Hague specialized in wall and ceiling decorations.
The ceiling painting of Augustin Terwesten was used in the restoration of the Chesmensky Hall after the Great Patriotic War, instead of the Laurent Lorenzo Werner plafond, which was lost in 1941. The restored hall was opened in 1969.
The interior of Chesmensky Hall, situated next to the Throne Room, is dedicated entirely to the Russian naval victory over the Turks in 1770. The walls are covered with 12 huge canvases depicting the battles, by the German painter Phillip Hackert.
