The St.Isaacs Cathedral was built between 1818 and 1858 by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand. It is one of the most beautiful and remarkable Christian constructions not only in Russia but also in the world. The interior of the cathedral with the area totals 4,000 square meters, can accommodate 14,000 people.
The Cathedral was decorated with one hundred fifty religious paintings, three hundred statues, bas-reliefs, gilded stuccoes, frescoes and 600 square meters of mosaics created by Fyodor Bruni, Karl Briullov, Vasily Shebuyev, Ivan Vitali and other great Russian masters of the day.
The Internal features such as floor, walls, arches and huge pillars are composed of multicolored granites and marbles gathered from all parts of Russia and 43 types of precious stones, including jasper, malachite, lazurite and porphyry.
More than 400 kilograms of gold, 1,000 tons of bronze and 16 tons of malachite were used for the decoration.
