St.Isaacs Cathedral in St.Peterburg Russia Description:
The St.Isaacs Cathedral in St.Peterburg, Russia is a marvel of architecture and engineering, one of the most impressive landmarks of the Russian Imperial capital of that time.
St Isaac’s Cathedral dates back to 1707, and was initially a small wooden church, commissioned by Peter the Great. It takes its name from St Isaac of Dalmatia, whose feast day coincided with the Tsar’s birthday (30th May). Peter the Great and his wife Ekaterina were married in the original church in 1712.
Since then, the cathedral was rebuilt four times to provide the structure we see today. The final version, finished in 1916, which becames St Petersburg’s main cathedral, was built by 23-yeas-old Auguste de Montferrand, who unfortunately died a mere month after the cathedral’s completion.
During the Siege of Leningrad, in the cathedral’s basement were stored treasures and artwork from the city’s museums.
To confuse the German bombers, the gilded dome was painted grey and a cabbage field was planted on the St.Isaac’s Square.
Since 1990, services have resumed at St Isaac’s Cathedral on special occasions. It remains open to the public as a museum.
