The Saint Basil's Cathedral, as viewed from Red Square, a testament to Russia’s unique architecture and beauty, is one of the world’s most recognizable landmarks.
St. Basil’s Cathedral was ordered by Ivan the Terrible to celebrate the capture of the Tatar stronghold of Kazan in 1552.
The design of the Saint Basil’s is quite beautiful and appropriately reflects both its location between Asia and Europe and the history of its origin. The color and the shape of this building is such which no other building in the world has come close to match so far.
Today, the Cathedral is part of the State Historical Museum, though it is still used for occasional religious services, namely on the Day of Intercession.
